The Mysterious Plain of Jars
The mysterious Plain of Jars in Laos is a megalithic site consisting of thousands of ancient large stone jars.
A dig conducted in the 1930s concluded the jars were most likely associated with prehistoric burial practices. Later excavations seem to support this idea due to the discovery of human remains, burial goods and ceramics around the jars.
The site is currently in the application process to become listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, the site is difficult to access because of unexploded bombs that were dropped during the Vietnam war.
Because of this, researchers are now using drones and 3D virtual reality technology to create a virtual replica of the site.
The technology may one day be adapted for use on smartphones, or for 3D printing of digital models. Plus, archaeologists can use the technology to revisit sites and further clarify their previous findings.
Can you dig it!
